WASARESCUEBOARD 2 MODS

Back in 2009 I made this board.
It has been since superseded
and has been hanging around collecting dust.
Time to put it to some use.
It is a 9'6" pig. It has a fully cambered bottom
with no concave in the nose.

I've been a bit reluctant to add concave to my boards.
Mainly due to my lack of shaping experience.
I did'nt want to bugger it up.
This board has'nt been in the water since August last year.
So with nothing to loose I set about putting some concave in it.
This board did nose ride pretty well.
It may now be even better.

A bit of red pigment on the foam to hide the rough edge.
Two layers of 4oz.
One on the bias.
One 0/90
With a 3" strip around the outline.

First deck lams on.

CARBON PIAPO SPOON

At this stage the bottom has
3 x 4oz & 1 layer of carbon.
That is daylight you can see through the bottom lam.
The deck has been dug out
using a variety of tools.
A 4" grinder, a convex surform,
a small block plane for the stringers,
and 40 grit sand paper on soft pad.

ANOTHER PROJECT

I've been collecting old pre loved boards
for the hand planes I've been making.
This piapo is from one of the old boards.

The original plan was to do a
timber alaia style hard rail with a glass bead.
But, as the shaping progressed it became
obvious that the blank was to thick to do this.
So it has a 50/50 rail all the way through.

First lams on bottom.
I'm doing a Greenough style spoon deck.
That's why I kept the blank as thick as it is.

I've had a roll of carbon lying around
for close to 10 years now.
This seemed like a good project to use some of it on.
I need to keep this thing pretty stiff.
By the time all the foam is removed
there is not going to be much of a structure left.
Hopefully the carbon will keep on keeping on.

Not sure what the weight is.
Carbon warp, S glass weft.

OLD FAITHFULL

I bought this RUPES sander
back in the early 80's.
Working in the composite boat building industry
and restoring a 16' timber putt putt
I thought it would be a worth while investment.
30 years later it is still going strong.
The only things that have been replaced
are the electrical brushes, the rubber boot and the paper clamps.

RUNNING MAN BENNETT

I picked up this old beauty about

No fin.
Many dings.
Delams on deck from knee paddling.
And some genius has tried to reshape the nose.
It could be 6" shorter than original.
Some homework needed here.

The last owner was toying with having it restored.
The cost, due the amount of work needed put him off.
He asked if I was interested in buying it.
So I did with no intention of restoring it.
The more I looked at it, the more I thought
it may be worth doing.
It has a nice rocker and outline.
It has been said that the best of these
old logs have been surfed into oblivion.
Maybe this one, is one that has survived.
Just!

The foil looks promising.

DIS-PLACE-MEN-TIA

I've had a bit of a crush on these boards for a while now.
I think it goes back to my surfing roots.
The boards that were in vogue in 68/69 in Australia
were less refined versions!
But it didn't stop us from riding them.
Hence, a growing collection of them.
And a couple of my interpretations of them.

BARRY,LARRY & FLOYD,RON and GREG.

Every once in a while to opportunity arises
to view a collection of boards ready for some restoration work.
This week I was lucky enough to.
All four boards are all owned by the same person.

Barry Bennett circa 63.
Running man logo on tail.
Purchased new by the present owners father.

G&S
Shaped by John Monie.
Glassed by Dave Wilson.
Custom order by present owner.

Ron.
Pulled in gun style tail.
The no 30 on deck @ nose.
The no 830 on deck @ tail ?

What a shame.
This McDonagh is completely
delaminated top and bottom.
The 2" balsa stringer has turned to mush.
It's still going to look good on the owners wall.

CULTURE NORM CULTURE

We headed off down to the big smoke post christmas
to partake in a little culture.

First up.
Picasso.
Well worth it.
A once in a life time chance
to see the work of a true master.
Got to love the goat.
Then over to the surf city exhibition.
At the Museum of Sydney.
Also well worth it.

The evening view from our hotel room.

MORE SUMMER FUN

They measure in at about 20" and 3'4"
Not sure what you would call the one on the left.
A double hand plane maybe.
It has a full length concave bottom.
The piapo has a spooned out deck
and full bottom camber.

My partner Kay says the piapo is great.
The double hand plane is yet to hit the water.

SURFBOARD EJECTS FROM ROOF OF CAR

I don't normally post about ding repairs.
But this one is worth showing.
I always get wry smile
and have a bit of a giggle to myself
when I hear stories about boards ejecting from
the roof of cars.

The last thing holding the board
to the roof of the car was the leg rope.
Which must be still attached to the plug.
Because the plug isn't in the board.

I know it is not funny when it happens to you.
It has happen to me too.

STANDARD EQUIPMENT

Back when I was a grom in the early 70's
cutting my teeth amongst older lads at the Wedge.
These SHANE Standards were standard equipment
for grommets up and down Sydney's Northern Beaches.
And beyond.
My first modern board was one
as was my partner Kay's.
My parents had a business relationship
with Shane and we would go down Shane's
big red brick factory on Mitchell Rd in Brookvale
to buy clothes and ugg boots and other stuff
he was producing for a shop they had.
This meant that I got to go out the back to see where the magic happened.
