This little McCoy is in pretty good shape apart from the tail.

The tail has been modified.

It is about 4" shorter than the dimensions on the deck suggest.

SNAKE AND GLOSS

Sitting down on the deck having a coffee after glossing this log.

Could hear a quiet rustling under me.

I thought it was the skinks running over the fallen leaves.

As I got up to check the board I turned around to see

this 1.5 metre Diamond Python basking in the sun

not a metre from me.

OIL

1st coat of oil top and bottom.

50/50 boiled linseed oil and gum turps.

Well seasoned timber.

Soaked up the oil like a sponge.

The plan was to have these two ready for last summer.

Thought I better get my finger out and get them done.

OLD FIN NEW FIN

Sadly someone thought this fin

would be better than the original fin.

So after some searching for photos or plans

this is what we came up with. Every photo showed a

slightly different shaped fin. Found some old plans

and went with the design on the plans.

The edges have been cleaned up.

GLASS CORED TIMBER FIN

This fin was originally planed for the

wasarescueboard 2 project.

It is a bit hard to tell the shape at this stage.

But I will add photos as it progresses.

Basically it is a curved trailing edge d-fin.

It has a 4mm glass core.

With 8mm Queensland maple

and balsa glued on each side.

Well almost.

The gloss coats have not

been wet and dry sanded or polished.

Bottom lam done.

As I suspected, it sprung back a bit.

So I set the board up with a string line

nose to tail over the deck.

The deck was weighed down with the weights

to the correct measurements.

Then the distance between the string line

and a point on the deck was taken.

The bottom lam was done.

The string line was reattached to the board.

Measurements taken and adjustments to the rocker made

by propping up the ends and adding a little weight

to the bottom.

The original plan was to do a resin swirl in the lams.

But because the rocker needed weighing down.

The board could not be flipped to cut the laps.

So it was done on the blank.

A couple of colours, a squeegee and a brush.

Pour on the base colour.

Then pour on the secondary colour.

And squeegee from the stringer out to the rails.

Then clean up the rails and runs with the brush.

The blank went a bit wild after I stripped the glass off.

Way to much rocker.

No stringer.

You get that.

Nothing 4 litres of water can't fix.

First lam on deck.

Just add water.

I suspect the rocker will spring back a bit.
So I will need to nut that one out prior to the bottom lam.

WASARESCUEBOARDTWO pt1

A few years ago I built a board

out of an old surf club rescue board.

Well I'm at it again.

As with the first one I had to make it wider.


So I cut it down the guts and
and added a 100mm section
that I cut out of another rescue board.
This was pre shaped to the desired rocker.




All glued up
and ready to go.




The new blank has been planed down.
And the planshape drawn onto the blank.

The planshape has been cut out

and the outline has been cleaned up.

MAIDEN VOYAGE

The alaia on the left has just

had its maiden voyage.

Not the best conditions.

We spent more time under the water

than on top of it.

JACKSON RICIE

This is the ricie of the Jackson.

It has been removed and cleaned up.

This photo was taken up against a window

with the light shining through.

Unfortunately it will not be a clear

when it is re bonded to the board.

YELLOW 'DALE' UPDATE

At some stage a plastic fin was crudely fitted

into the original Safeset finbox.

Making it impossible to use the finbox.

There were a couple of options.
Remove the old box and fit a new/second hand Safeset box.
Or fill the old box and set a new fin on top.
After removing a Safeset box from a donor board.
Which was a major job.
And caused some damage.
Filling the box and setting a new fin was by far the better option.
So the old box was cleaned up.
A 3mm rebate was cut into the box to make a clean edge.
Then filled with pigmented resin and milled fibre.
This was then capped with a two layers of 4oz cloth on the bias.


New fin set and filler coated.
Ready for sanding.

10' BALSA BUILD Pt 2

Once the four logs were glued up.

The middle two logs were glued up with the pre shaped stringer.

The logs were then planed down to the stringer.

The blue one is for the yellow Dale.

The natural one is for the Jackson.

The fish fins are stockies.
