I've had a bit of a crush on these boards for a while now.

I think it goes back to my surfing roots.

The boards that were in vogue in 68/69 in Australia

were less refined versions!

But it didn't stop us from riding them.

Hence, a growing collection of them.

And a couple of my interpretations of them.

to view a collection of boards ready for some restoration work.

This week I was lucky enough to.

All four boards are all owned by the same person.

Purchased new by the present owners father.

What a shame.

This McDonagh is completely

delaminated top and bottom.

The 2" balsa stringer has turned to mush.

It's still going to look good on the owners wall.

A double hand plane maybe.

It has a full length concave bottom.

The piapo has a spooned out deck

and full bottom camber.

My partner Kay says the piapo is great.

I don't normally post about ding repairs.

But this one is worth showing.

I always get wry smile

and have a bit of a giggle to myself

when I hear stories about boards ejecting from

the roof of cars.

The last thing holding the board

to the roof of the car was the leg rope.

Which must be still attached to the plug.

Because the plug isn't in the board.

I know it is not funny when it happens to you.

It has happen to me too.

STANDARD EQUIPMENT

Back when I was a grom in the early 70's

cutting my teeth amongst older lads at the Wedge.

These SHANE Standards were standard equipment

for grommets up and down Sydney's Northern Beaches.

And beyond.

My first modern board was one

as was my partner Kay's.

My parents had a business relationship

with Shane and we would go down Shane's

big red brick factory on Mitchell Rd in Brookvale

to buy clothes and ugg boots and other stuff

he was producing for a shop they had.

This meant that I got to go out the back to see where the magic happened.

Not that I don't love working on all restorations.

Hard to put a finger on it.

I shaped the little double ender in 2008.

I spent some time pondering on the colour work.

And I kept coming back to mini me.

This one is a little bit more subtle than my last one.

You know spring is not far off around these parts when

the Australian Cedar next door starts shooting.

The timber cutters from years past

use to spot the sort after Australian Cedar in the spring

by looking for the bright red leafs

emerging from this deciduous tree.

The resident Magpie pair are now lining their nest

with the hair from my recent haircut.

And this bloke.

The good old Australian Brush Turkey.

Building a brand new nest

for his lady friends to lay their eggs in.

He has been at it, scraping leaf mulch from all around

up onto his nest for a couple of weeks now.

An effort has been made

to keep as much of the original

and pre restoration finish as possible.

There are areas that have been repaired in the past

and not re pigmented.

Some of these areas have been repaired where needed

and not re pigmented.

There are dents and scratches

that have been left as original.

This board is not going to be polished.

I've been working on this old Scott Dillon for a while now.

Original pigment over glass job.

The nose and tail are pretty battered.

Even though they have been repaired in years gone by.

Repaired and faired up.

Ready for some pigment.

Freshly pigmented.

The Bluebird bottom has been filler coated.

All the rail dings have been glassed and sanded.

The deck delams have been re bonded.

A few lows on the deck need to be addressed

then it can be filler coated.

This is the SAM (Egan).

Sanded ready for glassing.

The logo area is a bit of a mess.

Half of them are missing due to a previous repair.

The remaining logos are delaminated.

The SAM fin.

The old yellowed gloss coat has been sanded off.

Two layers of 10oz and a layer of 4oz.

Lesley recently got hold of the remains of a snapped mal.

Which had been snapped and repaired twice before

and went to work patching together the foam

to build a Mini Simmons.

I'm gluing it up.

Hopefully I'll be able to post images as the project advances.

Kay and I went down to Newport yesterday for the interview

Kay was asked to do for a documentary,

which will be part of the surf city exhibition

in Sydney later this year.

Kay grew up in, and surfed at newport.

Being a founding member of Newport Plus,

Kay was mentored by Derek Hynd and

Tom and Nic Carroll to name a few.

To a high level of women's surfing

in and out of competition.

Finished shaping.

It is hard to see the subtle s deck

so I played around in photoshop

and came up with this.

As you can see from previous posts

my workshop is not setup for shaping.

All my walls are white for maximin brightness.

No side lights.

So I hang black plastic for some contrast.

If you think that stringer is bent,

you would be right.

This was the result of the original glue up

on the log this blank came from.

The 1" stringer is end grain balsa with the grain

running across the board.

It was only added to the original blank for some extra width.

So when the blank was glued up there was not enough

longitudinal strength in the balsa to pull the bend out of the bent

half of the blank.

Now all I need is the rain to stop so I can get glassing.

In 2006 I made this 9'6" log

out of a couple of SLSC rescue boards.

I have since made a new log.

This one has been in the rack for over 12 months.

So it is time to recycle it.

The masking tape and outline is a rough shape

to see if what I wanted would fit.

It does.

Time to strip the glass off.

The outline cut out and ready to clean up.

8' x 22 1/2" displacement hull.

Nose 17 3/4"

Tail 14 /3/4"

Wide point 6" fwd of half way.

I was hoping to go a little more than 6"

but that is all I could get out of the blank.

NOOSA 2011

We have just returned from our annual pilgrimage to Noosa.

Below are some images of the flight North.

No images of the waves.

There are plenty floating around in blogdom.

We had good waves every day.

There was some outstanding logging going on by the

international and local crew.

Johnsons was the standout spot on a mid to low tide.

I don't know who the surfer was,

but he caught a wave from behind the big rock at Johnsons

and it was fives and tens all the way to the beach just short of first point.

He did not move off the nose for the whole wave.

The waves were running down the bank in about 12" of water.

If you got the right one it was great.

Pick the wrong one and it was a drilling into the sand.

In January last year I posted a link to blog called

It has been put together by Gary Crockett,

who is curator
with the Historic Houses Trust of NSW.
In September this year an exhibition

on surfing in the 50's, 60's and 70's will be held at the

Museum of Sydney.

Gary came up to see Kay and I last weekend

about having a board restored for the exhibition,

and to see if he could use some of our small collection

of boards and books etc in the exhibition.

In a few weeks Gary is returning to interview

Kay for a documentary he is producing for the exhibition.

But when a board comes in for some restoration work

and it is a special looking shape, I'll pull a template off it.

My current ride,

a 9'6" pig was put together using some of these templates

and a few others not shown.

I might own the templates

but I don't own the designs.

If anyone wants a copy I am more than happy

These boards are from the late 60's and 70's.

They are becoming rarer and rarer.

So I think we need to document as much as we can.

This is why I also document all the dimensions etc,

of all the pre 70's boards I restore.

My partner Kay recons I need a Christmas Holiday project.

So here is this years project.

Back in 2004 I downloaded a PDF via Swaylocks.

It was an out of print book called

Surfboard Design and Construction.

It has some good info on surfboard evolution,

surfboard dynamics, design etc.

It also has some designs to build.

This is the third board I have build

from the designs in this book.

It is a bit of a hybrid of two of the designs

and a curve from a Keyo Plastic Machine

I restored last year.

The nose to the wide point was taken from the

6'6" Teardrop in the 2nd image.

The tail was taken from the 6'8" egg.

Unfortunately I could not get the two templates to blend.

So I had to use a longer curve which I found in the Keyo.

The blank was salvaged from an 80's McTavish mal

that was found on a tip on the far north coast by a friend of ours.

It was beyond restoration. Most of the glass had delamed

and the foam had shrunken between the outer stringers.

So it measures in at 6'6"

20.72" wide @ 2'6" from nose.

The nose is 17.60"

The tail is 15.10"

Not sure what the thickness is.

It is about 2.5"

It has a slightly cambered bottom

with a tucked under edge

blending just forward of the fin.

With a subtle S deck and a flat rocker.

This book is American.

The measurements are a bit confusing.

It uses inches and decimal inches.

So if you want to use the numbers you will need to convert the

decimals to mm or the nearest 16th or 8th etc.

Most of the decimal fractions convert to 64ths"

A bit of colour.

Some glass.

Double 4oz on the deck.

Single 4oz on the bottom.

10" box.

Glossed.

Gloss sanded to 600 wet and dry.

Waxed and ready to go.

THE SPIDER AND THE WASP

I've seen these guys flying off

with a live spider in their grasps.

But I think this guy may have bitten off

more than it could chew.

The spider was dead when I found them.

All of its eight legs had been removed.

By the wasp I expect.

I think the spider was to heavy

for the wasp to take flight.

So it was walking around on the deck

with the spider in its grasp.

This image was taken at the end of last week,

so some of these boards are now gone.

But there is still a bit to get through.

Then its three weeks of surfing, sleeping in,eating,

I've been working on this board

for a while now.

But I have neglected to post any images.

The deck is in pretty good condition,

apart from a dodgy leg rope plug instalation.

The bottom and rails haven't been so lucky.

So the first thing to do was to sand

and glass the rails.

Now the dings and lows can be repaired

without worrying about sanding through.

The original pinlines on the deck are now protected.

The nose and tail on this board were in bad shape.

Rather than try and repair them.

It was easier to cut them off and replace them

with cedar blocks.

It is a special a sound, a razor sharp plane makes,

when cutting through soft timber.

BACK TO FRONT

I've retired on of my logs.

I'm not quite sure what to do with it.

My options are.

Sell it.

Strip it and shape another.

Or do nothing and have it getting in the way.

While it was getting in the way the other day,

I was looking at it and I had a light bulb moment.

What if I stick a fin on the nose I thought!

Rocker looks ok.

Not sure if I can be bothered.

At the end of the day

there is still no camber in the bottom

and it is back to front.

Might be easier to sell it

or just let it get in the way.

What to do?

of the front yard that needs some attention.

Gardening in our neck of the woods can be a life and death pastime.

As Jimmy Buffett sings in his song,

"Peanut Butter Conspiracy"

It was a two man operation

Had it all down on a note

Ricky would watch the big round mirror

And I'd fill up my coat

Gardening around here is a two man operation.

One of us digs and the other

looks out for our gardening nemesis.

The deadly Funnel Web spider.

The one we dug up today would easily

reach from one side of the palm of your hand to the other.

We have picked these spiders up on a spade

and heard them striking the metal with there fangs.

At the other extreme in our garden is this fella.

Again it would stretch from one side of my palm

to the other.

You don't need to be a rocket scientist

to work out which creature one would prefer

to have sitting in ones hand.

Lesley Adamski is a extremely talented crafts person.

Far more talented than she gives herself credit for.

Lesley builds surfboards from recycled and plantation grown timber.

And endeavours to keep the finishes as green as possible.

Lesley's talents aren't restricted to only surfboards.

She has built a gaff rigged, clinker sailing dinghy.

As well as one off pieces of furniture.

Lesley also owns the odd plane.

Bill Cilia, a mate of mine and surfboard builder (nirvana surfboards )

has been restoring a balsa pig.

The photos show Bill and the board through various stages of the restoration.

Unfortunately it is a no name, but the blank glue up and construction

was done by someone with a fair bit of skill for the time.

The timber fin was left intact, cleaned up and re glassed.

The board is 9ft long by 20 inches wide.

Viva the pig.

I put my phone on my partners care while I unlocked mine

When she left for work, I watched her drive away.

Where's my phone I soon wondered.

This board has been laying in its owners backyard

for who knows how long.

To short and to new to ride in old mal comps,

it was left in old mal limbo, waiting for the right moment

to be remembered.

That moment came thanks to its owner reading

I think I've got one of those "Plastic Machines"

laying around in the back yard somewhere.

I've been meaning to do this for a while now.

I got hold of this Peter Clarke Tracker

with a Safe -Set box.

The fin that came with it is in great condition but too small.

Original fins are hard to come by, and by now are pretty brittle.

So I set about making a new glass fin to fit the original box.

I had some off cuts of a few layers of 4oz.

I cut them to fit the box and taped them together.

Next a small bog radius was put inside to hold things together.

Some glass tubing was cut and holes drilled in the bottom

of the box.

Then everything was fitted and screwed in place.

A total of three pours were made to fill the box.

Pours finished and ready for some detailing.

Fitted.

All I need to do now is restore the board.

Finished at last.

I took it on its maiden voyage on Saturday.

The waves were a little inconsistent

but when they came threw they were good

3' to 4' local point.

Here are some initial observations.

Very loose. I could tell it was going to bee loose when paddling out.

Very skatey when when going slow.

As soon as the wave walled up and the board gained some speed

it was like riding another board.

Still loose, but it tracked more and went where I wanted it to.

Bare in mind it is early days yet, but it feels like it is going to be a regular ride.

I found my self in places on the wave rarely visited.

Things are progressing.

The second bottom lam was done last weekend.

The fin has been set.

It's a Safe Set copy.

Set 14" up.

The bottom has been filler coated.

A bit of camber there.

New logo to hide that large gash in the deck lamed.

The deck has been sanded ready for gloss.

for this Scott Dillon pocket rocket.

The deck is good.

The bottom needs work.

I've got a spare

that will slot straight into that hole.

10' of beauty.

Beautiful outline.

Beautiful rails, pinched and well tapered at the ends.

We are test riding this weekend.

Damon told me that he is in the process of scanning a couple

of folders full of original logos from Jim the printer.

Unfortunately there is a large ding on the rail.

At some stage it had been filled with car bog and glassed.

This had to go.

The area was cleaned up and a mould was made.

A&B foam was mixed and poured.

The new foam has been sanded below flush.

This will be built up with glass, sanded flush and then capped.

A little while back I acquired this Gordon Woods.

See older posts for more images.

The bottom had some pretty severe foam shrinkage

and needed filling along with the normal dents and dings

acquired over time.

Rather than fill the individual lows and try and sand

them, without sanding down the surrounding foam.

A bog screed was pulled over the whole bottom.

Then sanded fair.

The rails, nose and tail were also filled where needed.

This board had a yellow tint glass job.

You wouldn't think so by looking at it now.

But there are areas on the deck and under the original fin

that are definitely yellow.

The original plan was to rebuild the bottom

then do a pigment job to the cut lap line.

But as happens on occasion with these

kinds of jobs, plans can change as the job progresses.

As has happened here.

The rails really needed some work and some extra glass.

So a pigment glass job around the rails onto the deck

seemed the logical way to go.

Two layers of 4oz.

One on one to go.

I'm not sure what was painted on this board.

But there appears to have been an attempt to remove it at some point.

What ever it is, it sanded off quiet easily.

It also protected the board

from UV attack.

When this cloud formation floats by.

9'3" Peter Clarke stringerless.

When I first saw the logo on this board

I thought it was a Norm Casey.

It turns out that Peter Clarke

took over the business from Norm Casey in 1965.

The board 7228 on the left is one of mine.

It is 8' x 24"

The board 7227 on the right is going to be restored.

It is 9'3" x 24"

Both of these boards were built at Gordon Woods surfboards

and they have consecutive production numbers.

So these boards could have been shaped, possibly only hours apart.

But they look worlds and months apart.

The board on the right is a V- bottom without the V.

Everything about it says V- bottom, but the bottom is cambered.

I think it is safe to say it was influenced by the V- bottom.

Now the board on the left is post V- bottom but pre Tracker.

It has a cambered bottom and a flatter rocker.

This shape could have been influenced by the boards
Midget Farrelly and Wayne Lynch

were getting into in 68.
I think what I'm trying to say here is
history has given us a time line that we know is accurate.
But every now and then boards appear that confuse things a little.
Getting back to the numbers.

Who would of thought that two boards built in 67/68,

could survive that long.

And then, end up side by side 42 years later.

All be it for a short time.

CENTRAL COAST SURF DESIGNS

Back in December I was asked to restore this old

Central Coast Surf Designs pintail.

Shaped by my mate Bill Cilia.

I sanded the bottom on Friday afternoon.

Its amazing the difference a piece of 40grit

sandpaper spinning at 1500 rpm makes.

As you can see.

It is ready for some glass.

One layer of 6oz.

The plan is to add a couple of 4oz lams

to build up the rails and replace the rail glass

that was removed.

This board is a rider.

The owner is not one for making them look pretty.

What you see is what you get as far as he is concerned.

But it will be glossed and polished.

Mc GRIGOR SINGLE FIN

I've been so flatout with ding repairs of late.

The restorations have been put on the back burner.

Today I started on this old Mc Grigor.

The deck is ok, but the bottom is pretty sad.

So the plan is to strip the glass of the bottom.

Clean it up and reglass.

So I stripped the glass around the cutlap line.

There are lumps and bumps everywhere.

Those white spots are old repairs

which were left behind as the glass was stripped off.

I was hoping to be able to work within the cutlap line.

But this is not going to be the case.

The rails are pretty beat up

and the foam needs to be shaved down a fair bit.

So I removed the glass to expose the rail radius.

This has allowed me to sand the bottom flat

and redo the rails.

Back in October last year

I started the restoration on this Chidgey.

All the bottom stressies and dings have been prepped

and glass cut.

All glassed.

A new nose was fitted and glassed.

All the repairs were sanded and the

bottom gloss coat applied.

The deck pinline was re done and the deck has been glossed.

This is a Warren Cornish

flyer swallow tail that I have been working on.

It is a one owner board which was a costom order.

Owner and board have travelled extensively over seas.

So it has sentemental value.

This photo shows the board ready for polishing.

It was wet and dry sanded to 1500g.

Polished and ready to go home.

I recently aquired this little beauty.

It's 7' 6"

As you can see the bottom is in pretty bad shape.

With a pretty bad gash on the deck.

This is going to take some time.

But I will up date when ever work gets done.

The plan is to rebuild the bottom.

Layup and set a new fin.

Pigment coat to the cutlap line and pinline.

Leave the deck and rails original.

Not sure about that gash on the deck.
